Books of 2021
Favorites: (in order of date read)
- Graceling by Kristin Cashore This was recommended to me by Diana (again LOL), although I had heard of it before, it hadn’t really been strongly on my radar. Graceling is book one in the series and my favorite by far. I think the main characters reminded me a little of On Fortune’s Wheel, one of my old favorites (that I should reread again soon I think). Fire is book two, and I gave it five stars. I also read and enjoyed books three and four, which got 4 and 3 stars from me respectively.
- Dear Ijeawele by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie A non-fiction collection of letters on the topic of many things, but based on suggestions on how to raise our daughters.
- The Forgotten Beasts of Eld by Patricia A. McKillip A recommendation of Elizabeth Lim’s favorite fantasy novels. I described it as "Tolkien-esque, but made more palatable for younger readers."
- Dear Girls by Ali Wong I thought it was sort of feminist and empowering, but in a very different way than Dear Ijeawele. More like a sleepover with your high school/college girlfriends.
- Dealing with Dragons / Talking to Dragons by Patricia C. Wrede Another Elizabeth Lim recommendation from the same Instagram reel. I ended up reading al four books in the series, and enjoyed them all, but the first one is the best, in my opinion. A very nice “unconventional princess” story. Talking to Dragons is book four and is very tongue in cheek about traditional hero stories.
- A Court of Thorns and Roses / A Court of Mist and Fury by Sarah J. Maas Recommended to me by basically everyone, but I finally caved when someone told me that ACoTaR was a Beauty and the Beast retelling. I’m a sucker for BatB retellings and I was not let down. ACoMaF is very very different (the same friend described it as a Hades/Persephone retelling). The plot of the series can give you a bit of whiplash. I also read and enjoyed book 3 but thought it was much weaker and it didn’t make me interested in reading book 4, which came out this year.
- A Psalm for the Wild-Built by Becky Chambers Loved it, wanted more, but book two isn’t slated to come out until next year, and I don’t trust publishers to keep their word so I’m trying not to hold my breath on it. The world reminded me weirdly of The Giver (Lois Lowry), even though it... is not at all related. Robots.
- The Kiss Quotient by Helen Hoang A genderbent retelling of “Pretty Woman” where the main female character is austistic. I read it and then immediately wanted to reread it.
5-Star Ratings in 2021:
Fiction--
- The Grace of Kings by Ken Liu Really epic; Asian inspired world building.
- Daughter of the Forest by Juliet Marillier Another Elizabeth Lim rec; Wild Swans (ATU451) retelling.
- Project Hail Mary by Andy Weir More similar to The Martian than Artemis was, but with a more fantastical element.
- Six Crimson Cranes by Elizabeth Lim Lim’s “Wild Swans” retelling; Asian-inspired world building.
Nonfiction---
- The Story of Stuff by Annie Leonard Consumerism and it’s impact.
- Educated by Tara Westover A memoir written by someone who grew up off the grid.
- Dear Memory by Victoria Chang Poetry in the form of letters that really resonated with me, as this woman’s life closely paralleled that of my close family.

Tumblr media
You are the first dream, the only dream I ever was unable to stop myself from dreaming. You are the first dream of my soul, and from that dream I hope will come all other dreams, a lifetime’s worth. - Cassandra Clare, Clockwork Prince
“Show me!” Feyre called, yelling behind the velvet curtain. Mor was trying on bridesmaid dress after bridesmaid dress, giving Feyre her own personal runway show.
Which she deserved. She was the bride-to-be, after all.
“Alright, okay,” Mor muttered from inside of the dressing room. “This one has a low back and a high neckline. And, I must say, my ass looks fantastic.”
Feyre laughed but that laughter faded once Mor came out, because she was right - she looked stunning. It hugged her body without being too risque and the deep, lavender color suited her perfectly.
“I love that,” Feyre said, eyes wide. “It’s perfect. Even the color. That’s our color. That’s your dress. You’re getting that.”
“Am I?” Mor asked.
“Yes, and if you don’t, I’m kicking you out of the bridal party.”
Mor snorted. “Fine. I accept. Now, I’m making you try on dresses.”
“My sisters should be here,” Feyre said, just as she had every other time Mor had suggested otherwise.
“You don’t have to get one today,” Mor said. “Please? Just try on a few then we can go get lunch.”
“Fine,” Feyre groaned, hopping up from the couch she was sitting on.
The owner of the boutique came over and helped Feyre into a room before Mor, now changed into her shorts and tank top, went crazy, bringing her a handful of dresses.
“Take your time,” Mor called, closing the curtain behind her. “I’ll be sitting right out here, let me know if you need help.”
Feyre sighed, taking in the line up of dresses before her. At first, she slipped on a ballgown, but the moment she stepped out of the dressing room and looked into the mirror, she wanted to yank it off her body and burn it. Too puffy, too frilly. She felt like she was going to prom - been there, done that. She went through two more that even Mor had cringed at before setting her eyes on a slim fit, beaded gown with an open back and a low, sweetheart neckline. It had thin straps and a long, beautiful lace train.
Feyre slipped it on.
She stepped out of her dressing room and looked into the mirror.
Mor gasped, eyes lined with tears.
“Feyre,” she breathed.
“I know,” Feyre said, shaking her head. “Damn you, Mor! I was supposed to wait for my sisters!”
They both broke into a fit of laughter as Feyre admired the dress in the mirror. It was perfect. It was flawless. There was nothing about it that Feyre didn’t like.
Rhysand wouldn’t be able to keep his hands off of her.
She was barely able to keep her hands off of herself.
It was just over her budget; but, she didn’t really care. She wouldn’t be telling Rhysand, who she scolded just the night before about ordering too many flowers - but, she didn’t really care. She would only ever have one wedding dress.
“How long will it take for this dress to come in if I ordered it today?” Feyre asked.
The owner went to a little computer where she typed away for a minute before saying, “Six months.”
All the breath left Feyre’s body.
But Mor wasn’t taking that shit.
“There isn’t any way it can get in sooner?” Mor asked. “Can she buy the one she has on and have it fitted? She’s getting married in October and that dress needs to be on her body when the day comes.”
The owner looked back and forth between Mor and Feyre.
Her lips thinned. “I will see what I can do.”
She went back to work on her computer as Mor snapped an endless string of pictures on her phone of Feyre in her dress, which she promised to send to Elain.
Five minutes later, Elain had sent a reply: G E T  I T  N O W
Amren’s replying text was similar: If she doesn’t get that dress I will break in after hours and steal it for her.
If Elain approved, it was a must.
If Amren was talking about breaking the law, it wasn’t unusual, but it was still a must.
The owner was still trying to figure out a way to get it in sooner, now speaking to someone on the phone in hushed tones.
Feyre looked in the mirror, again. It was beautiful. Stunning. She could imagine it, paired with a simple pair of heels and a long, simple veil. She could picture Rhysand’s face as she walked toward him in the dress. He would watch her with wide, teary eyes, and a small smile, full of utter adoration.
It was the dress.
Half an hour had passed before the owner rejoined them. The elderly woman sighed, as if all of her energy had been sucked away. “I can get it here in two months-”
Feyre heard nothing else because Mor had jumped up, off the couch, and was running to Feyre with her arms wide open. Laughing, Feyre let Mor embrace her, all while picturing her wedding day.
What a perfect day it would be.
~~~~~
Cassian had gone for a jog along the Sidra, listening to his hype playlist through his earbuds. It was a perfect Sunday afternoon. The sun was bright, high in the sky, not a cloud to be seen. The flowing waters of the Sidra were sparkling beside him.
Even Bryaxis had a little pep in his step, when usually he was trailing behind Cassian and whining after a mile.
They stopped near a little park where Cassian plopped down in the grass, Bryaxis beside him. After taking a drink from his water bottle, he squirted some into Bryaxis’ mouth, too, when his phone went off.
Nesta’s name popped up on his screen.
All of these movies you’re making me watch from the 80s are weird as fuck.
Cassian smiled at his screen before typing back, Which one are you watching now?
It was no secret that Cassian loved movies, so when Nesta asked for recommendations, he had given her a longass list and a giant stack from his personal collection. She had been living with Elain for about two weeks now, and was loving her sister’s company. Cassian hadn’t seen her much, though. He helped her move in, as he promised he would, but he was aware she needed space for now, and he was okay giving her that.
Didn’t keep them from having little text conversations nearly every day, though.
The Lost Boys, she sent back, with a little vampire emoji.
What?? Cassian texted. It’s a classic!
Oh, please, she replied. It’s obvious why you’re such a fan.
Bryaxis had climbed onto his owner’s lap and Cassian was scratching his head, between his ears, when he sent, And why is that?
It took her a minute to reply in which Cassian used to stretch out his long, sweaty legs.
Then the reply came: Bc you’re basically Michael
Cassian cocked his head to the side, even though she wasn’t around to see it. Untrue.
He could imagine her rolling her eyes. Especially when he got her text back. Long hair, motorcycle, thinks he’s hot as shit? Yeah, you’re Michael.
Cassian looked down at Bryaxis. “Nesta’s being mean, Ax.”
Bryaxis’s tail went wild at the mention of her name.
Cassian’s only reply was, I am hot as shit.
Nesta replied with the eye-rolling emoji.
Then, she sent, I’m almost done with the stack you gave me, and as weird as they may be, I wouldn’t mind if you brought me some more?
Before Cassian could reply, Nesta followed the text with, Maybe tomorrow? If you’re not busy after work.
Cassian looked back down to Bryaxis as he grinned. He didn’t know why he was grinning, felt ridiculous at grinning to himself and his dog in the middle of a crowded park, but he couldn’t stop that stupid little grin.
Sure. I’ll be over around 6?
Six gave him enough time to run home, shower, and grab another stack of DVDs she would surely be calling weird as fuck in no time.
Cassian finished stretching, did thirty sit-ups, and was back on his feet, Bryaxis’s leash in hand when Nesta replied: Perfect.
~~~~~
Elain looked at her phone, where she had set a timer.
It had only been fifteen seconds.
The bathroom was small, but she paced back and forth relentlessly. She had chugged half a gallon of water, Nesta watching her curiously as she did so, before excusing herself to go to the bathroom.
They had been watching some vampire movie from the 80s. Not exactly Elain’s thing. She was glad for any excuse that politely removed her from the room.
Even if said excuse was anxiety ridden.
Another glance at her phone.
Thirty seconds.
Her pacing continued, her fingers drumming wildly against her thighs.
It wouldn’t be the worst thing, right? I mean...Azriel would be great, of course, but it certainly wasn’t ideal. They had only been dating a few months, only began sleeping with each other the month before.
If it was true, it must have happened that first night, or one of the nights soon after.
It was too soon.
Elain’s anxiety shot through the roof.
She looked at her phone.
Forty-five seconds.
Two minutes felt like a lifetime when everything was on the line.
She was only a week late, but even when she was barely eating, her period had always remained normal - perfectly spaced out, returning like clockwork the third week of every month.
Her eyes met her phone.
One minute down.
One minute to go.
“It’s okay,” she breathed, shaking out her hands, as if that would somehow make the situation better. “It’s alright. Breathe.”
By the Cauldron, what if it was positive?
Would it really be okay?
Azriel would freak out, without a doubt.
He already had Mila. She couldn’t add more onto his plate.
She looked at her phone.
One minute, twenty seconds.
But he was so good with Mila. He would be an amazing father. So gentle and kind, so loving and passionate.
But would he want to have kids with Elain?
She imagined he hadn’t even thought about such a thing yet. Elain hadn’t even thought about it, not until she went eight days over her start day without her period.
For the Mother’s sake, they hadn’t even used the word love with one another yet.
Phone.
One minute, forty-seconds.
Elain couldn’t breathe. She slumped down to the floor, on top of the gray, fluffy rug, and closed her eyes.
In, out.
In, out.
Don’t panic.
Panic doesn’t help.
But she couldn’t help it. Her eyes began to water, the tears trickling down her pale cheeks.
She suddenly had a feeling that everything was about to change. She was a woman. She knew her body. Either it had gone into shock with all the lifestyle changes she had made in the recent weeks, or this was all real.
Her timer went off, and her eyes shot open.
She took her phone off the counter and silenced the timer.
Then, with a shaky hand, she pulled the test off the counter.
Pregnant.
She read it twice, ten times, twenty times, that single word the only word she could think of.
She was pregnant.
Pregnant.
With child.
With Azriel’s child.
A fist pounded on the door, scaring Elain shitless. She swore, quietly, scrambling up from the floor.
“Hey, it’s Az. Nesta said you came upstairs. I assume you’re in there, since….well, you’re not anywhere else up here. Hope you don’t mind me coming by early. I dropped Mila off with Mor and Feyre to look for a flower girl dress. I was told I’m not allowed to see it before the wedding day, so...”
Elain took a deep breath, hoping her voice remained steady when she said, “Hey! Oh, I’m just...fixing my contacts.”
A pause. “Okay. I’ll go downstairs and wait with Nesta. I’ll catch the end of The Lost Boys.”
“Great,” Elain said, and her voice broke.
Azriel didn’t move from the other side of the door. She could see the shadows from his feet. “You okay? You sound upset.”
“No, no, I’m fine,” she promised him, although she obviously wasn’t. “Just a little emotional today.”
“Alright,” Azriel said, uncertainly. “Can I open the door?”
“I’m naked,” she blurted.
“While putting in contacts?” Azriel said, huffing a laugh. “Not that it’s anything I haven’t seen before.”
The doorknob turned, and Elain cursed herself for not locking the door.
She quickly hid the test stick behind her back as he came in.
He took one look at her red cheeks, her blurry eyes, and frowned. “Hey…”
She was frozen in place as he stepped toward her, as he took her face into his hands and wiped away her tears. “What’s wrong?”
She shook her head, and Azriel pulled her into his arms.
His body stilled.
He was taller than her by quite a bit, no doubt looking down as she planted her face into his chest.
Down at Elain’s hands, behind her back, gripping the test so hard that her knuckles were white.
Azriel reached around her and took it from her hands. He stepped back, looking down at it.
Pregnant.
He took a step back, studied it as if he wasn’t seeing it correctly.
His face was unreadable.
Elain’s hands flew over her mouth as she broke into a sob.
Azriel’s gaze jerked up, his eyes widened as she cried. “Hey, hey, no..”
He set the test down on the counter and pulled Elain into his arms. He held her tightly against him as she wept.
“I’m sorry,” she choked out, voice muffled against his shirt.
“About what?” he whispered. “You don’t have to apologize, El. Okay? Don’t apologize.”
She nodded, and when she looked up at him, his hazel eyes shone. “Please tell me what you’re thinking.”
He hesitated, his hands still rubbing her back. “I’m not….I’m in shock, I guess. But, I’m not….mad, Elain, I think you think I’m mad.”
She took a deep, shaky breath and nodded. “I’m in shock, too.”
“Okay,” he breathed. “Well, that’s good.”
Elain laughed, softly. “How is that good?”
“Pretty sure shock is normal in these situations,” he said, quietly.
All the tension left Elain’s shoulders. “I’m scared.”
“About what?” he asked, voice low.
“All of it,” she said. “Carrying a child, birthing a child, and everything that comes after that. And you...Azriel…” Her words trailed off, but Azriel didn’t say anything. He watched her and waited, patiently. “You would be an amazing dad, Az, but I don’t want to trap you.”
His brows furrowed as he brushed her newly fallen tears away. “Is that what you think? That I would stay with you because you’re pregnant? Or, that I would even want to leave you in the first place?”
Elain looked down. She shrugged. She wasn’t sure what she thought, wasn’t sure how to sort her thoughts.
Azriel lifted her chin back up with his fingers. “Do you want to have this baby?”
It was the same question that Elain had stayed up the night before asking herself, over and over again. If it’s positive, do you want to keep it? Elain laid her palms flat against his chest, feeling the hard muscle beneath. Although afraid, she felt completely confident when she answered, “Yes.”
Azriel smiled, tentatively, and nodded. “Then I’m going to be here, okay? You’re not trapping me, Elain. You couldn’t trap me if you tried. I know we’ve been together for a few months, and we’re still in that honeymoon stage, and I won’t pretend that I know what the future holds....But I do know that I love you.” He kissed her forehead. “And I’m not going anywhere. We’re going to do this, and it’s going to be okay, okay?”
Elain laid her palm against his cheek, brushing away the tear he had that fell. “You love me?”
She knew Azriel, knew he didn’t say things unless they were true. And, after talking with Mor, she knew Azriel had never said that word to another woman.
Azriel’s eyes softened. “I do. But, you don’t have to-”
“I love you, too,” she breathed, interrupting his modesty.
And it was true.
Yes, she had loved Graysen, but it was a false love. She loved the idea of Graysen, loved the life they had built, but it wasn’t true, Graysen had proven that in the end.
But with Azriel…
Azriel was truth, kindness, gentleness, passion, genuity, love. He was everything she needed for herself, all wrapped up into one, perfectly imperfect man.
And she loved that about him.
She loved him.
He smiled down at her, and it was one of those smiles that she had only seen a handful of times from him. His teeth showed, his eyes went bright, his plump lips curved upward. That smile...it was an image that Elain kept in her memory for her darkest of days.

This is How We Fly by Anna Meriano
Type: Novel Publisher: Philomel Books Release date: Dec. 15 Den of Geek says: It wouldn’t be a geek rec list without this grab bag of high school coming-of-age and Quidditch. Whether you’re a current or recovering Harry Potter fan or looking for a unique setting, this might have something for you.
Publisher’s summary: 17-year-old vegan feminist Ellen Lopez-Rourke has one muggy Houston summer left before college. She plans to spend every last moment with her two best friends before they go off to the opposite ends of Texas for school. Determined to do something with her time, Ellen (with the help of BFF Melissa) convinces her parents to let her join the local muggle Quidditch team. An all-gender, full-contact game, Quidditch isn’t quite what Ellen expects. There’s no flying, no magic, just a bunch of scrappy players holding PVC pipe between their legs and throwing dodgeballs. Suddenly Ellen is thrown into the very different world of sports: her life is all practices, training, and running with a group of Harry Potter fans.
Even as Melissa pulls away to pursue new relationships and their other BFF Xiumiao seems more interested in moving on from high school (and from Ellen), Ellen is steadily finding a place among her teammates. Maybe Quidditch is where she belongs.
But with her home life and friend troubles quickly spinning out of control–Ellen must fight for the future that she wants, now she’s playing for keeps.

Over the Woodward Wall by A. Deborah Baker (Seanan McGuire)
Type: Novel Publisher: Tordotcom Release date: Oct. 6
Den of Geek says: An experimental companion to McGuire’s intricate novel Middlegame, Over the Woodward Wall first came to life as a middle grade story that serves as a pop culture touchstone for the characters in that adult novel. It’s also a story by a master in its own right, although how well it holds up outside the companion novel is yet to be determined.
Publisher’s summary: Avery is an exceptional child. Everything he does is precise, from the way he washes his face in the morning, to the way he completes his homework – without complaint, without fuss, without prompt.
Zib is also an exceptional child, because all children are, in their own way. But where everything Avery does and is can be measured, nothing Zib does can possibly be predicted, except for the fact that she can always be relied upon to be unpredictable.
They live on the same street.
They live in different worlds.
On an unplanned detour from home to school one morning, Avery and Zib find themselves climbing over a stone wall into the Up and Under – an impossible land filled with mystery, adventure and the strangest creatures.
And they must find themselves and each other if they are to also find their way out and back to their own lives.

Night Shine by Tessa Gratton
Type: Novel  Publisher: Margaret K. McElderry Books  Release date: Sept. 8
Den of Geek says: We’re all about crossovers between fantasy and YA here, and this looks like a good stepping stone for a kid who is just about ready to start reading high fantasy. The prose style is slow and deliberate as the author tells a tale of romance, kidnapping, and friendship.
Publisher’s summary: In the vast palace of the empress lives an orphan girl called Nothing. She slips within the shadows of the Court, unseen except by the Great Demon of the palace and her true friend, Prince Kirin, heir to the throne. The sorceress has never bothered with boys before, but Nothing has uncovered many secrets in her sixteen years in the palace, including a few about the prince.
As the empress’s army searches fruitlessly, Nothing and the bodyguard set out on a rescue mission, through demon-filled rain forests and past crossroads guarded by spirits. Their journey takes them to the gates of the Fifth Mountain, where the sorceress wields her power. Punching the Air by Ibi Zoboi and Yusef Salaam
Type: Novel in Verse Publisher: Balzer + Bray  Release date: Sept. 1
Den of Geek says: Authors like Tochi Onyebuchi have taken hold of the moment to write political novels about incarceration in the last few years. This mix of poetry and prose adds to that genre with real world experience from prison reform activist Yusef Salaam. Publisher’s summary: The story that I thought
was my life
didn’t start on the day
I was born
Amal Shahid has always been an artist and a poet. But even in a diverse art school, he’s seen as disruptive and unmotivated by a biased system. Then one fateful night, an altercation in a gentrifying neighborhood escalates into tragedy. “Boys just being boys” turns out to be true only when those boys are white.
The story that I think
will be my life
starts today
Suddenly, at just sixteen years old, Amal’s bright future is upended: he is convicted of a crime he didn’t commit and sent to prison. Despair and rage almost sink him until he turns to the refuge of his words, his art. This never should have been his story. But can he change it?
With spellbinding lyricism, award-winning author Ibi Zoboi and prison reform activist Yusef Salaam tell a moving and deeply profound story about how one boy is able to maintain his humanity and fight for the truth, in a system designed to strip him of both.

Gold Wings Rising (The Skybound Saga) by Alex London
Type: Novel Publisher: Farrar, Straus and Giroux  Release date: Sept. 1
Den of Geek says: It’s always nice to see a fantasy series that moves away from the staple creatures, even if I love dragons, and this series replaces them with ghostly birds that give it a horror movie flavor.
Publisher’s summary: The war on the ground has ended, but the war with the sky has just begun. After the Siege of the Six Villages, the ghost eagles have trapped Uztaris on both sides of the conflict. The villagers and Kartami alike hide in caves, huddled in terror as they await nightly attacks. Kylee aims to plunge her arrows into each and every ghost eagle; in her mind, killing the birds is the only way to unshackle the city’s chains. But Brysen has other plans.
While the humans fly familiar circles around each other, the ghost eagles create schemes far greater and more terrible than either Kylee or Brysen could have imagined. Now, the tug-of-war between love and power begins to fray, threatening bonds of siblinghood and humanity alike.

Don’t Ask Me Where I’m From by Jennifer De Leon
Type: Novel Publisher: Simon & Schuster Release date: Aug. 18
Den of Geek says: This looks like it could be an incisive and hard-hitting book that speaks to the way American Latinx students experience racism and navigate high school social life. It has gained high praise from authors including Celeste Ng.
Publisher’s Summary: Liliana Cruz is a hitting a wall—or rather, walls.
There’s the wall her mom has put up ever since Liliana’s dad left—again.
There’s the wall that delineates Liliana’s diverse inner-city Boston neighborhood from Westburg, the wealthy—and white—suburban high school she’s just been accepted into.
And there’s the wall Liliana creates within herself, because to survive at Westburg, she can’t just lighten up, she has to whiten up.
So what if she changes her name? So what if she changes the way she talks? So what if she’s seeing her neighborhood in a different way? But then light is shed on some hard truths: It isn’t that her father doesn’t want to come home—he can’t…and her whole family is in jeopardy. And when racial tensions at school reach a fever pitch, the walls that divide feel insurmountable.
But a wall isn’t always a barrier. It can be a foundation for something better. And Liliana must choose: Use this foundation as a platform to speak her truth, or risk crumbling under its weight.

Lobizona by Romina Garber
Type: Novel  Publisher: Wednesday Books (Macmillan)  Release date: Aug. 4
Den of Geek says: Described as a Hogwarts-style fantasy world with werewolves, this fantasy doesn’t flinch from the real world effects of ICE and deportation.
Publisher’s summary: Some people ARE illegal.
Lobizonas do NOT exist.
Both of these statements are false.
Manuela Azul has been crammed into an existence that feels too small for her. As an undocumented immigrant who’s on the run from her father’s Argentine crime-family, Manu is confined to a small apartment and a small life in Miami, Florida.

A world where her unusual eyes allow her to belong.

Elatsoe by Darcie Little Badger
Type: Novel  Publisher: Levine Querido Release date: Aug. 25
Den of Geek says: Charming illustrations and a ghost story deeply tied to a family’s history promise a richly textured tale from this Lipan Apache author.
Publisher’s summary: Imagine an America very similar to our own. It’s got homework, best friends, and pistachio ice cream.
There are some differences. This America been shaped dramatically by the magic, monsters, knowledge, and legends of its peoples, those Indigenous and those not. Some of these forces are charmingly everyday, like the ability to make an orb of light appear or travel across the world through rings of fungi. But other forces are less charming and should never see the light of day.
Elatsoe lives in this slightly stranger America. She can raise the ghosts of dead animals, a skill passed down through generations of her Lipan Apache family. Her beloved cousin has just been murdered, in a town that wants no prying eyes. But she is going to do more than pry. Feathertide by Beth Cartwright
Type: Novel  Publisher: Del Rey  Release date: July 30
Den of Geek says: This has won a lot of praise for its prose. While some fairy tale adaptations can come off as empty, not actually adding anything to the context of the tradition they’re supposedly writing in, this one’s specificity seems like it might set it apart and add detail to the central metaphor about a young girl’s search for her family.
Publisher’s summary: Born covered in the feathers of a bird, and kept hidden in a crumbling house full of secrets, Marea has always known she was different, but never known why. And so to find answers, she goes in search of the father she has never met.
The hunt leads her to the City of Murmurs, a place of mermaids and mystery, where jars of swirling mist are carried through the streets by the broken-hearted.
And Mara will never forget what she learns there.

A Beautifully Foolish Endeavor by Hank Green
Type: Novel  Publisher: Dutton  Release date: July 7
Den of Geek says: YouTube sensation Hank Green’s science fiction debut, An Absolutely Remarkable Thing, kicked off this series about alien robots. The sequel shows the aftermath, and continues to engage with the author’s internet in internet culture and science.
Publisher’s summary: The Carls disappeared the same way they appeared, in an instant. While the robots were on Earth, they caused confusion and destruction with only their presence. Part of their maelstrom was the sudden viral fame and untimely death of April May: a young woman who stumbled into Carl’s path, giving them their name, becoming their advocate, and putting herself in the middle of an avalanche of conspiracy theories.
Months later, April’s friends are trying to find their footing in a post-Carl world. Andy has picked up April’s mantle of fame, speaking at conferences and online; Maya, ravaged by grief, begins to follow a string of mysteries that she is convinced will lead her to April; and Miranda is contemplating defying her friends’ advice and pursuing a new scientific operation…one that might have repercussions beyond anyone’s comprehension. Hood by Jenny Elder Moke

Type: Novel  Publisher: Scholastic Press  Release date: May 19
Den of Geek says: It’s arguable whether a new Hunger Games book from the point of view of the man who will become the despotic President Snow is really what readers wanted, but it’s here. Inevitably this one will spark a lot of conversation after the runaway success of the original series.
Publisher’s summary: It is the morning of the reaping that will kick off the tenth annual Hunger Games. House of Dragons by Jessica Cluess
Type: Novel  Publisher: Random House Books for Young Readers Release date: May 12

Also, there are dragons and a frightening fantasy job interview, two of my favorite things.
Publisher’s summary: When the Emperor dies, the five royal houses of Etrusia attend the Call, where one of their own will be selected to compete for the throne. It is always the oldest child, the one who has been preparing for years to compete in the Trial. But this year is different. This year these five outcasts will answer the call. . . .

When a tsunami strikes the island their parents are vacationing on in Malaysia, it soon becomes clear that their parents are never coming home. Forced to move to Boston from their sunny California home for the rest of their senior year, each girl struggles with secrets their parents’ death has brought to light and with their uncertainty about the future. Instead of getting closer, it feels like the wave has torn them apart.
Little Universes explores the powerful bond of sisters, the kinds of love that never die, and the journey we all must make through the baffling cruelty and unexpected beauty of human life in an incomprehensible universe.

What I Like About You by Marisa Kanter
Type: Novel  Publisher: Simon & Schuster Books for Young Readers Release date: April 7
Den of Geek says: YA romance, and digital age romance in particular, can easily come off as cheesy or derivative. But this ‘love triangle between two people’ looks like a twist on relationships and online identity, plus the coziness of a crush story.
Publisher’s summary: There are a million things that Halle Levitt likes about her online best friend, Nash.
He’s an incredibly talented graphic novelist. He loves books almost as much as she does. And she never has to deal with the awkwardness of seeing him in real life. They can talk about anything…
Except who she really is.
Because online, Halle isn’t Halle—she’s Kels, the enigmatically cool creator of One True Pastry, a YA book blog that pairs epic custom cupcakes with covers and reviews. Kels has everything Halle doesn’t: friends, a growing platform, tons of confidence, and Nash.
That is, until Halle arrives to spend senior year in Gramps’s small town and finds herself face-to-face with real, human, not-behind-a-screen Nash. Nash, who is somehow everywhere she goes—in her classes, at the bakery, even at synagogue.
Nash who has no idea she’s actually Kels.
If Halle tells him who she is, it will ruin the non-awkward magic of their digital friendship. Not telling him though, means it can never be anything more. Because while she starts to fall for Nash as Halle…he’s in love with Kels.

Publisher’s summary: In this sweeping Dust Bowl-inspired fantasy, a ten-year game between Life and Death pits the walled Oklahoma city of Elysium-including a girl gang of witches and a demon who longs for humanity-against the supernatural in order to judge mankind.
When Sal is named Successor to Mother Morevna, a powerful witch and leader of Elysium, she jumps at the chance to prove herself to the town. Ever since she was a kid, Sal has been plagued by false visions of rain, and though people think she’s a liar, she knows she’s a leader. Even the arrival of enigmatic outsider Asa-a human-obsessed demon in disguise-doesn’t shake her confidence in her ability. Until a terrible mistake results in both Sal and Asa’s exile into the Desert of Dust and Steel.
Face-to-face with a brutal, unforgiving landscape, Sal and Asa join a gang of girls headed by another Elysium exile-and young witch herself-Olivia Rosales. In order to atone for their mistake, they create a cavalry of magic powered, scrap metal horses to save Elysium from the coming apocalypse. But Sal, Asa, and Olivia must do more than simply tip the scales in Elysium’s favor-only by reinventing the rules can they beat the Life and Death at their own game.

Type: Novel Publisher: G.P. Putnam’s Sons Books for Young Readers Release date: March 3, 2020 Den of Geek says: To put a twist on historical fantasy, author Marie Lu focuses just to the side of a world-changing life. Nannerl Mozart was a real person, and has appeared in fiction before with the aim of bringing some recognition to the famous musician’s talented but forgotten sister. The fairy tale element sounds like it will provide strong atmosphere in this musical novel. Publisher’s Summary: Born with a gift for music, Nannerl Mozart has just one wish–to be remembered forever. But even as she delights audiences with her masterful playing, she has little hope she’ll ever become the acclaimed composer she longs to be. She is a young woman in 18th century Europe, and that means composing is forbidden to her. She will perform only until she reaches a marriageable age–her tyrannical father has made that much clear.
And as Nannerl’s hope grows dimmer with each passing year, the talents of her beloved younger brother, Wolfgang, only seem to shine brighter. His brilliance begins to eclipse her own, until one day a mysterious stranger from a magical land appears with an irresistible offer. He has the power to make her wish come true–but his help may cost her everything.

Publisher’s summary: The sequel to the New York Times bestselling epic Dread Nation is an unforgettable journey of revenge and salvation across a divided America.

Cast Away: Poems for Our Time by Naomi Shihab Nye
Type: Poetry Publisher: Greenwillow Books Release date: 2/11/2020
Den of Geek says: This unique book of poetry seems perfectly suited to today’s environmental and humanitarian issues. What happens to the things we throw away? What happens to the people who aren’t wanted? The metaphor is rich.
Publisher’s summary: Acclaimed poet and Young People’s Poet Laureate Naomi Shihab Nye shines a spotlight on the things we cast away, from plastic water bottles to those less fortunate, in this collection of more than eighty original and never-before-published poems. A deeply moving, sometimes funny, and always provocative poetry collection for all ages.
“Nye at her engaging, insightful best.”―Kirkus (starred review)
“How much have you thrown away in your lifetime already? Do you ever think about it? Where does this plethora of leavings come from? How long does it take you, even one little you, to fill the can by your desk?”―Naomi Shihab Nye
National Book Award Finalist, Young People’s Poet Laureate, and devoted trash-picker-upper Naomi Shihab Nye explores these questions and more in this original collection of poetry that features more than eighty new poems. “I couldn’t save the world, but I could pick up trash,” she says in her introduction to this stunning volume.
With poems about food wrappers, lost mittens, plastic straws, refugee children, trashy talk, the environment, connection, community, responsibility to the planet, politics, immigration, time, junk mail, trash collectors, garbage trucks, all that we carry and all that we discard, this is a rich, engaging, moving, and sometimes humorous collection for readers ages twelve to adult.

Rebelwing by Andrea Tang
Type: Novel Publisher: Razorbill Release date: 2/25/20
Den of Geek says: Robot dragons? What more to say? The fantastical war story setting and high-energy cast of characters looks like it’ll make this one a good read for fans of Pacific Rim.
Publisher’s summary: Things just got weird for Prudence Wu.
One minute, she’s cashing in on a routine smuggling deal. The next, she’s escaping enforcers on the wings of what very much appears to be a sentient cybernetic dragon.
Pru is used to life throwing her some unpleasant surprises–she goes to prep school, after all, and selling banned media across the border in a country with a ruthless corporate government obviously has its risks. But a cybernetic dragon? That’s new.
She tries to forget about the fact that the only reason she’s not in jail is because some sort of robot saved her, and that she’s going to have to get a new side job now that enforcers are on to her. So she’s not exactly thrilled when Rebelwing shows up again.
Even worse, it’s become increasingly clear that the rogue machine has imprinted on her permanently, which means she’d better figure out this whole piloting-a-dragon thing–fast. Because Rebelwing just happens to be the ridiculously expensive weapon her government needs in a brewing war with its neighbor, and Pru’s the only one who can fly it.
Set in a wonderfully inventive near-future Washington, D.C., this hilarious, defiant debut sparkles with wit and wisdom, deftly exploring media consumption, personal freedoms, and the weight of one life as Pru, rather reluctantly, takes to the skies.

Is kaam ko dono bache dil jami se seekhtey rahe aur is kam mein wo maharat hasil kartey chale gaye…
Bahi behan dono mein behead piyar tha, bahi apni behna ki har baat bina mangey poori kar deta tha q k.. us ki behan bool nahi sakti thi, bahi har tareeqe se apni behan ko khush rakhne ki poori koshish karta rehta tha, qudrat ki setam zareefi ye thi k road accident mein us bahi ki behan ne bolna chor diya tha…

Bachpan se hi wo har jins-e-mukhalif (females) ki aankh ka tara tha wo… us ka har koi dost ban’ne ki chah liye howe tha jise wo hans kar qabool kar leta tha lekin ye dosti ghar se bahir gaoon k maidan mein rehti thi…

I read 230 books in 2017.
Down fifteen from last year...I am a math genius and initially miscounted by ten somehow, so I though I had hit 240...this was not so. The fluctuations tell you when I was studying for exams. (I’m done with all my fall exams now so I only have one scheduled for next year!) I did not make a new year’s book-of-the-month resolution and did not really expand into audiobooks more either. Oh well. This was a tough year for me all around and I’m hoping for a better one to follow.

Book Asks!
CHOOSE BETWEEN:
1. Libraries or bookstores?
I like to have my own collection so definitely bookstores.
2. Hardcover or paperback?
Paperback, especially the floppy kind.
3. Hard copies or ereaders?
I have an ereader that I sometimes use but I would rather have a hard copy.
4. Bookmarks or dogears?
I don’t judge but I would never dogear a book. I have a small bookmark collection or will use random pieces of paper.
5. New books or worn books?
I would rather a new book but I also love used bookstores.
FAVOURITE:
1. Genre?
Young adult fantasy
2. Author?
There are so many authors I love but right now it might be Rick Riordan.
3. Series?
I love the Sarah J. Maas books but I haven’t finished one of her series yet so probably The Mortal Instruments series.
4. Individual book?
Dragonfly by Julia Golding is still a favourite of mine.
5. Classic book?
It’s a tie between Macbeth or Hamlet by Shakespeare.
ENVIRONMENT:
1. Favorite time of day to read?
If I can read from morning to night than I’ll be happy.
2. Favorite place to read?
I have a reading nook in my room and I love it.
3. Silence or background noise?
Silence but sometimes if I have a song stuck in my head I’ll put on some instrumental music to drown it out.
4. Preferred weather for reading?
Snow storm all the way.
5. Favorite reading-time snack?
Anything that I can eat without getting a stain on my book.
PAST, PRESENT, AND FUTURE:
1. Favorite childhood book?
Amanda Greenleaf by Ed Kavangh
2. Currently reading?
Nothing right now but there are so many good new releases that come out in the beginning of May that I can’t wait for.
3. Book you want to read most?
Queen of Shadows by Sarah J. Maas
4. Reading goals?
My goodreads goal is 100 books this year.
5. Book you could read forever?
Either A Court of Mist and Fury by Sarah J. Maas or The Host by Stephenie Meyer. I’ve read them both so many times and I love them.
ANTI-FAVORITES:
1. Worst book you’ve read?
I know I’m repeating myself but Me and Earl and The Dying Girl by Jesse Andrews makes me angry it was so bad.
2. Book you couldn’t even finish?
I bought Betwixt by Tara Bray Smith recently and thought I was really going to like it but one of the pov’s was so bad that I didn’t even care what happened to the other characters.
3. Book you didn’t understand?
After I thought about it a little bit I vaguely got the ending but I Am the Messenger by Markus Zusak was good but so confusing.
4. Most overrated book?
The Fault in Our Stars by John Green was a good book but it was way over hyped, especially when the movie came out.
5. Problematic book?
Everything, Everything by Nicola Yoon kind of romanticized illness and the twist ending made it even more apparent.
AESTHETIC: (feel free to include pictures)
1. Prettiest cover?
Tumblr media
It looks better in person and has gold edged pages.
2. Best illustrations?
Tumblr media
An Illustrated History Of Shadowhunters and Denizens of Downworld illustrated by Cassandra Jean is so, so beautiful.
3. Favorite map in a book?
Tumblr media
The map in the Six of Crows by Leigh Bardugo is totally my favourite.
4. Best overall book aesthetic?
Tumblr media
The Mortal Instruments series and The Infernal Devices series booth have these special edition spines that are amazingly illustrated.
5. Ugliest book?
Tumblr media
The Daughter of Smoke and Bone series by Laini Taylor is a good series but the covers are just so bad.
GENRE:
1. Scariest book?
In the Shadow of Blackbirds by Cat Winters was super creepy and there was this one scene that haunted me for weeks afterwards.
2. Best fantasy world?
The Shadowhunter world made by Cassandra Clare has a couple great series in it that I love.
3. Funniest book?
The sarcastic humor in Rick Riordan’s books is so funny to me.
4. Saddest book?
Impulse by Ellen Hopkins made me cry so hard with that heart wrenching ending.
5. Book you would never want to read?
I’ll Give You the Sun by Jandy Nelson sounds like a good book but it is going to be at 2 different times and show how these twins relationship was damaged. I don’t like that writing style.
CHARACTERS:
1. Character you wish to be friends with?
I would love to be Rowan Whitethorn, first seen in Heir of Fire by Sarah J. Maas, is amazing and I love him and Celaena together. Even hanging out with him a day would be cool.
2. Favorite antagonist?
So even though he was literally the worst and such a bad guy, I thought Sebastian from The Mortal Instruments series was such a good bad guy.
3. Favorite protag?
Katy Swartz from the Lux series by Jennifer L. Armentrout is someone I relate to so much and I found her perspective refreshing.
4. Favorite supporting?
Nico di Angelo in The Heroes of Olympus series by Rick Riordan is a perfect little baby who I must protect at all costs. He is adorable!
5. Most-hated character?
Maybe not the most hated but I found Colin Singleton, from An Abundance of Katherines by John Green, to be kind of a pretentious character.

For the Ask: 1, 11, 12, 17?
Hello! I’m going to make the leap and assume it’s for the “A Writer’s Ask Game”, since it is one the most recent things I’ve posted….
1. Do you listen to music when you write?
Yes!
Music helps me keep my focus, as well as be my motivation for certain scenes. I’ve found classical music to be the most helpful when trying to write action scenes. Escala’s Palladio is very climatic and builds slowly to end fast, and loud - like a battle scene. Lindsey Stirling is great as well. I highly recommend Shatter Me, Roundtable Rival, Master of Tides, Moon Trance, and the Arena. They all share the ability to tell a story - plus, I’ve seen the music videos, so that helps too.
A tip that I learned for writing and painting  is to listen to an entire soundtrack or album. That way, you’re fully surrounded by the artist and really get into the vibe/tone of that selection. Handmade Spotify albums help too. I try to make playlists that emulate the storyline, or certain characters within the story.
I enjoy Classical music the most, I’d say, but I just love music as a whole.
11. What books and/or authors have influenced you the most?
Too many.
First off, Stephen King. I think he writes horror and science fiction beautifully and in a way that is both understandable and scary. I have yet to say, this is so predictable, when reading one of his books.The Long Walk was the first book I ever read from him, and I highly recommend reading it. HIGHLY.
Then there is J.R. Ward. UGH. I love her. I have all of the Black Dagger Brotherhood Series and The Fallen Angels Series (I have yet to start this). I love the way that she captures a man’s essence and character throughout all of the books. I thoroughly enjoy all of the fight scenes, sex scenes, and conversational scenes - especially the dialogue from the character, John Matthew, who is mute. The use of ASL is done in a perfect manner as well.
Another author is none other than… Agatha Christie. I read her book before going to see the film, Murder on the Orient Express. She does a wonderful job of writing the tale of murder and the multiple trails to follow. I’d love to collect more works in order to see the other ways of how she does it. (I’m trying to learn how to do murder-mysteries.)
Last, by not least, would be Sarah J. Maas. UGH. She may have taken the throne for my #1 Author so far. In her series, A Court of Thorn and Roses, I firstly liked how she spun different stories into new tales: Beauty and the Beast, Hades and Persephone, and Snow White. It’s not all in your face with these classic stories, but rather she pulls the archetypes and themes to spin them into a new tale. I love her characters across the entire board: Feyre Archeron, Azriel, Amren, Morrigan, Rowan Whitethorn.
Some books for honorable mentions:
The Captive Prince trilogy by C.S. Pacat
The Chosen at Nightfall series by C.C. Hunter
Paranormalcy series by Kiersten White
Hereafter series by Tara Hudson
Carry On by Rainbow Rowell
Aristotle and Dante Discover the Secrets of the Universe by Benjamin Alire Saenz
A Discover of Witches trilogy by Deborah Harkness
12. Describe your perfect writing space.
I first started writing the answer for this by thinking about my current writing space. My room. Hoodie up and tied close. Headphones blaring, and all distractions eliminated.
My ideal space - my dream space - would be in a library. Not a big one, no. It’d be a medium sized one, perhaps large enough for a small sitting nook and another comfy chair. The walls - from floor to ceiling- are covered with books and first collections of works, painted in a soft golden yellow hue, and in the reading nook, it is a maroon accent wall. I would read all day until the sun would set and the room would fill with darkness. I’d wrap up as I do now, play some music, and start writing in the dark. My ideas normally come from the dark.
17. What writing habits or rituals do you have?
I’m trying to make a habit of writing down my storylines, characters and themes down in a central notebook. I’m actually very close to entirely filling up a notebook with stray ideas and short drabbles. Other than that, I try to collect models on Pinterest into a board of character inspirations…
There isn’t much else that I do in terms of habits or rituals? Not that I am aware of…
Thanks for the ask! Send me more! I’m always accepting asks.
